“The Devil is not so black as he is painted” – how to combine physical art with augmented reality
In one of the last articles, we wrote about augmented reality and how it can improve our lives in the future. The next questions which we will ask are how do artists use it and how does the audience react to it? In other words – you do not need to have a master’s degree in computer science in order to create such art.
Virtual art, the real “wow”
Augmented reality is a system that technologically enhances the real world. This means that in most cases, artists prepare physical works of art that attract the audience and additionally offer them an AR experience for free. And what could happen in such a situation? Everything the author will be able to come up with. In the example below, the artist used augmented reality to break the planes of the painting into several different parts. At the same time, we can see art in its full bloom next to it.
It is quite a common procedure. Artists create images or mysterious structures that show us what they hide only after we look at them through the phone screen. Be it dancing figures, falling fragments, or aliens using stones placed on a piece of paper to play with.
How do the viewers perceive AR art?
The answer is obvious – wonderfully! Imagine that you are going to the exhibition of your favorite artist. You watch their works, sipping wine and having a great time. After you have gone through the whole thing, you suddenly notice that one of your friends is viewing one of the pictures on the phone. Being curious, you approach him, and he shows you miracles on the screen. The fun starts all over again! It turns out that each picture hides much more than you assumed. AR gives us such possibilities. The first question that comes to your mind in such a situation is…
How can we discover AR as recipients?
There is no one and only application when it comes to AR displays. It is more about the capabilities of the equipment itself, i.e., whether the camera and the rest of the components are strong enough to bear such treatments. Nowadays, they are. Therefore, augmented reality can be visible on many different platforms – when it comes to art, the famous application is OverlyApp, but we can also see it on Instagram or Google Maps. Just look around – if you can see something in AR, there will be information about it, for sure.
Is that all?
About AR?
Absolutely not.
In this article?
Yes.
We hope that now, you will be able to better visualize what the topic of AR looks like from all sides, both the recipient and the creator. The most important thing to remember is that if you want to start creating AR art, it is not that difficult, so let your imagination flourish. That is what we do at Mateico. We want to enable artists to freely move with their art to the virtual world, help them in this process, organize vernissages where you will be able to see what AR art looks like in practice, and redefine art anew.
